El Estado de la Florida otorgó $346,000 a UNIDAD
al Programa de Empleo y Servicio Comunitario
para Personas de la Tercera Edad

Se estima que la fuerza laboral de americanos mayores de 55 años crecerá más de un 30% en la próxima década, puesto que se va a extender la tradicional edad de retiro.
El programa para personas de la tercera edad (SCSEP), cuenta con 50 participantes de bajos ingresos y pocas posibilidades para conseguir empleo. Inicialmente se imparte un entrenamiento pagado con el fin de ingresarlos en el mercado laboral actual y posteriormente se les asignan 20 horas semanales de servicio comunitario en agencias gubernamentales u organizaciones sin fines de lucro. El programa es patrocinado por State of Florida Department of Elder Affairs (SCSEP) y Miami-Dade County Office of Community Development.
La mayoría de los participantes carecen de inglés básico, conocimientos de computadoras, manejo de oficina y no saben cómo demostrar sus habilidades a los empleadores. Además de sus bajos ingresos, no cuentan con una pensión ni con planes de ahorro; sin embargo, sí tienen deseos de trabajar.
La ciudad de Miami Beach tiene una economía dinámica, ofreciendo oportunidades de trabajo en las industrias de turismo y servicios. La experiencia nos ha demostrado que en nuestra comunidad hay demanda de trabajo para las personas mayores que estén motivadas y dispuestas a adquirir nuevas habilidades o a actualizar las que ya tienen.

REGLA SNOWBALL
58 years old, came to UNIDAD/MBHCC seeking employment. Mrs. Snowball is a native of Cuba, fluent in English, with less than three years in the U.S. After receiving training and placement, she is now working at Goodwill Industries of Miami. “I am grateful to UNIDAD/ MBHCC for helping me get back to the workforce, making possible for me to secure a place to live, preventing me from becoming homeless,” explained grateful Regla.
BASILIO SUAREZ
68 years old, Cuban native. Mr. Suarez is a retired electrical engineer who has lived in the U.S. fewer than five years. After visiting Little Havana One-Stop Center he learned about Miami Beach Senior Employment Program. Basilio completed employability training, as well as 20 hours of community service assignment at Miami Beach One-Stop Center. Mr. Suarez is now a permanent full time employee of UNIDAD/ MBHCC in the Resource Room.
MARLENE GOMEZ 60 year old, native of Colombia. After many interviews because of limited English and physical limitations, Mrs. Gomez decided to seel help at UNIDAD/MBHCC. A couple of months later upon the completion of several employability skill trainings; Malene's skills and self-esteem improved. Mrs. Gomez is now working a full-time job and is pleased with the help and support she received at UNIDAD/MBHCC.
PRICIDA GARCIA 64 year old, born in the D/Republic and former scholl teacher. She moved to New York to be closer to her children but soon realized that her language barrier was not allowing her to find employment in her field. Soon after her arrival to Miami, Pricida's son suggested she seek help from MBHCC's senior employment program. UNIDAD/ MBHCCstaff helped Mrs. Garcia find a job as a Home Care Assistant. Since, she has returned to MBHCC and continues furthering her career choices.
